We have just experienced a historical election in this country, one in which several social boundaries were shattered. This is one of the reasons that we carefully chose which piece we would like to produce. This semester, ALTO has chosen to bring a literary classic with strong political tones to San Diego State University: an adaptation by Ian Wooldridge of George Orwell's Animal Farm. We do this in hopes of reaching out to other departments on campus, such as the Political Science, English, Liberal Studies, and all of the Minority Studies Departments, as well as the Theatre & Film departments.

Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is a timeless story of a group of revolutionary Animals who strive for a Utopian society where Animals reign over themselves. The Pigs, the most intelligent of the Animals, lead a coup to rid themselves of their ruthless task master, the Farmer Jones, then elect two of their own as leaders, Snowball and Napoleon. Soon a power struggle ensues, resulting in Snowball's expulsion by Napoleon.

Napoleon becomes a tyrannical ruler over all the Animals on the Farm. As the Animals' lives get harder and harder they wonder if they were worse off before or after the revolution.

This allegory, written as a criticism of Stalinism, will be brought to San Diego State University's Experimental theatre in the form of Ian Wooldridge's stage adaptation.

Produced by A Liberated Theatre Organization (ALTO), Based on the George Orwell work as adapted for stage by Ian Woolridge. Directed by Raul Luna.
